The East Midlands has links to three billionaires

The 2024 edition of the Sunday Times Rich List has been released - revealing the wealthiest people in the East Midlands. 

This year has seen the biggest fall in billionaires in the guide’s 36-year history, from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 165 this year.

The list is based on identifiable wealth, including land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies.

Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, said: “This year’s Sunday Times Rich List suggests Britain’s billionaire boom has come to an end.

“Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away.

“Thousands of British livelihoods rely on the super-rich to some extent. We’ll have to wait and see whether we have now reached peak billionaire, and what that means for our economy.”

Who are the richest people in the East Midlands, according to the Sunday Times?

Mike Ashley

The owner of Shirebrook-based Sports Direct, Mike Ashley’s wealth fell by £41 million to £3.799 billion over the past year. 

Ashley, the founder of Frasers Group,  has stores across Nottingham including House of Fraser in Victoria Centre and Sports Direct on Clumber Street.

He remains in 49th place on the list. 

John Bloor

Derbyshire-born John Bloor saw his wealth fall by £92 million over the past year. 

The 80-year-old, who owns Bloor Homes and Triumph Motorcycles, is still worth a cool £3.396 billion. 

He remains in 54th place.

Tony Langley

Unlike Ashley and Bloor, businessman Tony Langley saw his wealth rise between 2023 and 2024. 

Langley, the owner of Nottinghamshire-based engineering firm Langley Holdings, is worth £1.4 billion - representing an increase of £50 million over the past year. 

The 69-year-old started his business at the age of just 21 and now employs 5,000 people across the world. 

Langley has climbed eight places in the list to 121st. 

Duke of Devonshire

Peregrine Cavendish - the 12th Duke of Devonshire - is worth an estimated £910 million.

The Duke, who owns Derbyshire’s Chatsworth House, saw his wealth increase by £5 million over the past year. 

The 80-year-old has climbed one place on the list to 182nd. 

The Kirkland family

In 207th place on the list are the Kirkland family, worth an estimated £821 million. 

The family own the Bowmer and Kirkland construction business, based in Heage, Derbyshire.

The family’s wealth has increased by £10 million over the past year. 

David Clowes and family

The wealth of Derby County owner David Clowes and his family came in at £360 million in the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List. 

The 55-year-old owns Clowes Developments, a construction and real estate development company. 

Clowes and his family saw their wealth increase by £10 million over the past year, although their ranking dropped by three places to 348th.
