A Second World War-era grenade has been detonated at a popular Nottingham park. 

The grenade was found near Arno Vale Road, Woodthorpe, at around 7.25pm on Wednesday (April 24).

The device was subsequently taken to Gedling Country Park, where bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion. 

Nottinghamshire Police said: “The grenade, which appeared to be from the Second World War era, was found in Arno Vale Road, Woodthorpe.

“Police cordons were temporarily put in place on the road, while joint services explosive ordnance disposal engineers safely removed the object.

“Bomb disposal experts then carried out a successful controlled explosion soon afterwards. 

“No evacuations were necessary due to the rural location."

A former colliery, Gedling Country Park opened in 2015 and boasts around 580 acres of open space for walkers and cyclists to enjoy.
